Scrum: an agile development methodology is facilitated by a Scrum Master. In scrum team, scrum master is a person who is accountable for removing impediments to the ability of the development team in order to deliver the product goals and deliverables. The Scrum Master is not a traditional team lead or project manager, but acts as a facilitator for both the Product Owner and the team. He is the one responsible for removing the obstacles that may affect the progress of developers and minimising distracting influences so that the team can reach weekly sprints.

Who can be Scrum Master ?

Before going in to the discussion of How to become a Certified Scrum Master lets have an overview of who can become a Scrum Master. Since you are reading this post and are searching about how to become a Certified Scrum Master so I will assume that you are already familiar with Agile Development in general and Scrum framework in particular. The good thing about becoming a Certified Scrum Master is that there is no eligibility criteria to become a scrum master. One should only understand Scrum values, practices, and applications and to fulfil the requirements of this role one needs to provide a level of knowledge and expertise above and beyond that of typical project managers.

Since CSM is a knowledge based certificate so almost anyone can become a certified Scrum Master, irrespective of their background or industry, provided they earn CSM certificate by passing the exam and proving they have thorough knowledge of the desired scrum values, practices and applications. For earning CSM certificate one must take a Certified Scrum Master course from a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) or Endorsed Scrum Trainer (EST) and demonstrate the progress through an online CSM test created by Scrumalliance.

But when it comes to whether it is relevant for you to become a certified scrum master or not then it totally depends on your current profile and what you are looking to achieve. If you want to get the job and start your career in an organisation following Agile Development, this certificate is definitely relevant and can help you landing a job. But if you already are practising agile development but want to accelerate your career development than this certification might not be as relevant as you need to focus more on how best you are at identifying scrum values, implementing its practices and fulfilling the requirements in your organisation or it might be relevant for you to explore other scrum certifications like Certified Scrum Professionals (CSP).

Benefits of becoming Certified Scrum Master

The CSM exam has a lot of credibility because it is hard to obtain since it comes from Jeff Sutherland and Ken Schwaber the creators of Scrum. So having a certification on your resume will definitely give you an edge over those who don’t have a certification for their skills.  It gives proof to the employers that you are trained and eligible to handle the role. A certified person won’t necessarily be more skilled than one without certification, but during the recruitment process the employers might be inclined to select candidates with certifications.

By becoming a certified Scrum Master you’ll join a community of recognised Scrum experts committed to continuous improvement and the Agile methodology. Scrum.org features a global network of Scrum practitioners and trainers. This active community serves as a library of knowledge, a way to find live events and a place find (and provide) guidance.

According to payscale the median salary for the role of Certified Scrum Master in United States is $86,297 with the highest salary equivalent to $135,000.
